I find myself tempted – ALL THE TIME – to rebrand my site. There are just so many gorgeous things, brilliant ideas and inspiration all around. I am always thinking of ways to make the whole thing better.
But, more often than not, rebranding isn’t – AT ALL – what I should be focusing on. It’s a distraction and a way for me to avoid working on other stuff that is actually more important for my business right now.
It’s so dang tempting, however, to spend time sprucing things up, isn’t it?
So, how do you know when it IS actually time to focus on rebranding your website and maybe even your whole business?
1. If you feel like you aren’t really connecting with your clients and your audience.
You may be booking clients, but they just aren’t your DREAM clients. They pay the bills, but you don’t wake up super excited about working with them.
This is a good sign that your branding is off. Good branding will attract the exact type of client that you most want to work with. They will get who you are and what you do – you’ll be speaking the same language and you’ll find yourself booking more clients that you love.
2. You’ve changed and so has your business.
We all grow up and we evolve. So does our business. It may be that your message – what you do and who you serve has become something new. (or you may be wanting it to change into something else.)
This is a good time to rebrand – so you can make sure that what you’re putting out into the world is a perfect match for where you and your business is at today – and where you want it to be in the future.
3. Your website/brand/business feels out of date.
As technology changes, so does our ability to make things more beautiful on the web. New trends, improved ways to lay things out and people’s changing visual vocabulary can make old designs feel, well.. old. Which can make you and your business not feel relevant in today’s “upgrade” society.
Sometimes, rebranding is simply about bringing your brand current, so people feel like what you have to offer is FRESH and CURRENT, and applies to them TODAY.
4. It’s time to look more professional.
Pretty much everyone, when we first start out, we don’t have the funds to create a flashy, bold brand. We bootstrap and do things ourself. Which may not be very polished or professional looking.
Also, when you’re first starting out, it’s likely that you aren’t clear on your message and what your business is all about. As you work on your business for awhile, you get more clarity. With that, comes a need to make sure your business looks the part of a professional, well established brand.
5. Your audience has changed.
When I first started working for myself, my audience was stay at home, married moms. Now, I work with creative, mostly single (or divorced) women who crave the freedom that an entrepreneur life allows. My audience changed – and with it, I needed to change up my branding.
As your business evolves, you may find yourself needing to change your branding to be a match for a brand new audience that you didn’t foresee yourself working with when you first set up camp.
6. You want to reposition yourself.
You have a new idea and you want to show up in the market place as a brand new presence that isn’t associated with your current brand.
Often, it’s time to rebrand when when you are redoing the WHO of your business – what you stand for and who you serve. It may be time to let go of an old identity and create something new.
There are a ton of other reasons that could be good why’s for rebranding yourself. For sure, I would make sure that you aren’t wanting to do it just to avoid some other aspects of your business. It is WAY more fun to redecorate your living room than it is to roll up your sleeves and clean out the garage! (ugh! that is SO on my to-do list and I’m avoiding it all costs!)
If you are thinking about rebranding and want to bounce some ideas around, I’m still offering some free Brand Audit + Brainstorming sessions – to take a look at where you are and where you want to be. This offer is going down at the end of the week, so book a call with me asap!
